“Cemeteries are a good place to rest. Heave a sigh, sit down. In spite of all the pain and suffering, there is a lot of accumulated wisdom here. This can be a place to find answers. The past is under my feet, the future is above my head, and for this short time, I exist entirely in this moment and know peace. This helps me understand my end. It also helps us understand why it is SO vital to engage in cemetery preservation.” - Kelly Madden, Deschutes Land Trust

Camp Polk Pioneer Cemetery, also known as Hindman Cemetery, is the final resting place for some of Sister's first European settlers with known burials dating back to 1880. The cemetery is inactive and lacks the licensure to approve new burials of any kind.

Our mission is to preserve our historic burial ground. We honor those interred here through education, site preservation and community engagement. We're a 501c3 non-profit committed to preserving the cemetery as well as educating the public about its cultural significance for the benefit of generations to come.
