Preserving one of Oregon's Historic Pioneer Cemeteries

The Camp Polk Pioneer Cemetery Preservation Committee is a 501c3 non-profit organization that both owns and maintains the Camp Polk Pioneer Cemetery for the benefit of the public. This cemetery is inactive and a historic site, lacking any licensure required by law or the Oregon Mortuary and Cemetery Board to approve any internments, including cremains. The preservation committee members are also required by law to report any newly found remains and are strongly committed to preserving this historical site as it exists today for generations to come.

Hindman Cemetery

Camp Polk Pioneer Cemetery, also known as Hindman Cemetery, is the final resting place for some of Sister's first pioneer settlers with known burials dating back to 1880. It is recognized for its historical significance and is listed on both the Deschutes County Historic Sites and Oregon Historic Cemeteries lists.

“Cemeteries are a good place to rest. Heave a sigh, sit down. In spite of all the pain and suffering, there is a lot of accumulated wisdom here. This can be a place to find answers. The past is under my feet, the future is above my head, and for this short time, I exist entirely in this moment and know peace. This helps me understand my end. It also helps us understand why it is SO vital to engage in cemetery preservation.” - Kelly Madden, Deschutes Land Trust
